How I was inspired to go into Graphic Design

What Made Me Appreciate Designing

In their respective order:

  • Discord, Reddit, and Steam Interfaces: These platforms featured a very sleek look that also functioned very efficiently.
  • Undertale: A game that rose to popularity easily through a complex story: I found the choice not to use colour in fights very interesting, as it made the fights feel more distant to the player. Through the game there are several subtle design choices the creator used to influence emotion which I greatly admired.
  • Minecraft & Terraria: Again two very popular games, I appreciated these for their very straight forward GUIs which make the games easy to pick up and learn, even with no prior gaming experience.
  • Mister Miracle Comic: Unlike usual comics, Mister Miracle features a 3×3 panel grid on each page, which worked very well with the story’s style of story telling, and had me personally interested in.
  • Kamen Rider/ Tokusatsu: Live-action films/shows that featuring special effects. What interested me was the suit design in shows, taking into consideration several factors such as: series theme and character motif. I greatly admired the level of thinking that go into each costume to incorporate all kinds of different inspirations.
  • Ipad: When first introduced the technology was very different from what many consumers and myself were used to, but the minimalist, unique, sleek, and easy to use design made it extremely popular.
  • Windows 10: The extremely efficient and functional design I found admirable.
  • Roblox: Terrible in every essence. The game acted as basis of everything I hate, and ultimately what made me appreciate everything else better.
  • Google Drive: Close to Discord, Reddit, and Steam, in terms of what about them inspires me to do Graphic Design, I believe Google Drive to be admirably efficient and organized. Though what makes Google Drive different is that it is actually a collection of tools. What I find admirable is that despite being a collection of Google Docs, Google Slideshow, Google Sheets, and more, the hub of tools ties the different things together so well it often feels more like one tool.

What Interested Me in Design

Watchmen (2009) trailer: The first cinematic movie trailer I’d ever seen. Prior to this I had little interest in movie trailers and rarely came across any. This trailer was an eye-opener to me for a higher quality use between excellent cuts and music, without over sharing move content.

Wintergatan – Marble Machine: A massive and complex musical apparatus, this left me awestruck at the complete and utterly monumental planning and effort that could go into creating something.

Movies: Rather vague, despite showing a specific example, I’m not necessarily referring to Scott Pilgrim vs The World. However this movie is also a prime example of what got my attention in design. Scott Pilgrim vs The World features extraordinary special effects, not just in quality, but also in design choice. The comic aesthetic keep the movie entertaining to this day, and holds onto the original works’s energy.

Deciding Factors

In their respective order:

  • School: A large deciding factor was definitely my education. Mainly through my highschool experience I was able to glimpse into several different career choices I might have been interest in, with me ultimately deciding that Graphic Design looked the most appealing and interesting.
  • Cards: Though seemingly mundane of an inspiration, the design of poker cards have been around for an incredibly long period of time, and that has always inspired me. After its creation, it has been so perfect at being itself: there has been little change in its design in over the ages, while staying the same in functionality.
  • Games: Anyone who says they’ve never played a game is the biggest liar you’ll ever meet. From a young age games have always had a large influence on me, spurring on my imagination inspiring me to someday make something myself.
  • Creating a Club: In my final year of high-school I and several friends made a club on a whim. Despite only jokingly starting the idea, the experience had me better appreciate working with others which had me open up more to the idea of Graphic Design while I had still been sitting on a fence about the decision.
  • Art Exhibits: For the longest time I never knew what I wanted to do when I grew up, but constant interaction with art pushed me strongly in the direction. Even if Graphic Design wasn’t the first thought that came to my mind when I was younger, the push toward the direction definitely had a strong influence.
